Prestige and New Jazz

Striking images
of the East Coast jazz

PRESTIGE was established in New York 1949 by Bob Weinstock. The label's name was initially New Jazz and the first address in New York was 782 8th Ave, which was printed on the early New Jazz records. In 1951 the company changed to Prestige and moved to the legendary address 446 West 50th Street, printed at the early red-silver and yellow-black labels.

In the early years, Weinstock used a variety of recording studios around the city, but soon most of the recordings were made by Rudy van Gelder in his home studio in Hackensack, New Jersey.

To begin with the company´s cover designs were quite basic and poor, with some exceptions. But Rudy van Gelder, who really had improved the sound quality for the label, urged better covers to match his sound. On his advice, Prestige employed the talents of freelance designers such as Reid Miles, Tom Hannan and Gil Mellé. With in-house designers, and producers, Esmond Edwards and Don Schlitten they created a new striking design profile for the label.

Reviving New Jazz

By the mid 1950s, Prestige was the leading independent jazz label besides Blue Note Records. At this time Prestige reviving the NEW JAZZ name as a subsidiary label for recordings by emerging musicians.

The company maintaned its strong identity during the 1960s, introducing other subsidiary labels like Bluesville, Swingsville and Moodsville and also used Soul music as a new ticket to success.

Bob Weinstock sold the label in 1971 but Prestige continued as a part of Fontana Records.

Prestige issued some 110 LPs (10") and about 70 EPs between 1951 and 1955, followed by almost 900 LPs in the 7000 series that ended in 1970. In the 10000 series (1970-1975) some one hundred LPs were issued.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s about 120 LPs were issued on the New Jazz label. In the early 1960s about 40 LPs were issued on the Moodsville label, and about the same number on the Swingville label. Finally, on the Bluesville label about 80 LPs were issued in the first half of the 1960s.

ESMOND EDWARDS worked as producer, as well as photographer and designer. He was one of the first African- American executives in the recording industry.

He was born in 1927 and came to Prestige in 1957. He created many of the labels cover designs, mostly included his own fine photography. He stay for ten years, before going on to head of the Verve label for MGM in 1967. He became the vice-president of Artist and Repertory for Chess Records in 1970. He died in 2007.

DON SCHLITTEN started his long career in the jazz record business by co-found the Signal label in 1955. He produced some legendary LPs with Duke Jordan, Gigi Gryce and Red Rodney before the label was sold to Savoy after a couple of years.

Schlitten continued as a freelance producer, mainly for the Prestige label. He also had a talent for photography and visual art and created many of the labels cover designs.

In the early 1970s he co-found, with Joe Fields, the Cobblestone label and two years later also the Onyx label. In mid 1970s the partners ended their collaborations. Joe Field ended up with Muse, and Schlitten founded the Xanadu label.
